In the middle of a hectic workday, taking a break may be the last thing on your mind. But always going full steam ahead with your to-do list is not sustainable and will burn you out. So, let me introduce you to micro breaks that you can weave into your day-to-day called “Brain Breaks”.
Brain breaks let you take a breather during your busy day to refresh, recharge, and maintain a healthy work-life blend. Whether it’s two minutes or an hour, the key is to give your mind a rest. Here are three simple and effective brain break ideas to get you started.
- Stretch and Move: I work on the computer all day, so naturally I have tense shoulders and a stiff back. When you find yourself feeling similar, it’s time to incorporate some movement into your day. Stand up from your desk, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and stretch your arms up. If you work remotely and are up for something spontaneous to take you out of your daily rut, break out in a silly dance. Don’t worry, no one is watching!
- Engage in Mindful Breathing: When was the last time you let out a nice, long sigh? Sighing may sound negative, but can be quite stress relieving when done intentionally. Take a deep breath in for 3 seconds, hold for 3 seconds, and sigh it out for 3 seconds. You’ll quickly feel more connected to the present. Now, continue a few more times, while trying to focus on each inhale and exhale. Don’t you feel lighter already?
- Get Outside: A quick stroll outside to get some fresh air is another great way to give yourself a much needed brain break. Putting yourself in a new environment has the ability to provide a new perspective, lifting you from the confinement of your home office or workspace. Make sure to tap into your five senses – feel the warmth of the sun or cool breeze on your skin, take in the sweet scent of flowers lining the path, listen to the birds chirp. Whether it’s a midday walk or afternoon trip to the park, you should feel instantly calmer being surrounded by nature.
Taking brain breaks during your busy workday is a powerful way to maintain mental well-being, boost productivity, and prevent burnout. Remember, even a few minutes of intentional time away from work can have a significant impact on your overall focus and energy levels. By incorporating stretching and movement, engaging in mindful breathing, and simply getting outside, you can give your brain much-needed rest. So, make it a priority to refresh and recharge throughout the day, because you deserve it!
